The Spiritans Visit Itsekiri Monarch

In keeping with their age-long commitment to evangelisation, the Holy Ghost Fathers and Brothers, known globally as the Spiritans, continue to bear the light of the Gospel to the world’s frontiers. Faithful to the legacy of their founders, Claude Poullart des Places and Francis Libermann, the Spiritans labour in mission territories often neglected, reaching out to people in rural communities where the Gospel is scarcely heard and the presence of Church personnel is minimal.

In line with this missionary spirit, the Holy Ghost Missionary Movement (HGMM) in Warri Zone paid a courtesy visit to His Royal Majesty, Ogiame Atuwatse III, CFR, the revered monarch of the Itsekiri Kingdom, on May 8th, 2025. The delegation, led by Very Rev. Fr. Victor Nikoro, C.S.Sp., and Fr. John E. Mammah, C.S.Sp., was warmly received at the royal palace. Also present were devoted members of the HGMM—laity who passionately support the Spiritan mission through prayers, finances, and material resources.

The purpose of the visit was multifaceted. Firstly, the delegation extended heartfelt greetings to His Majesty and acknowledged the Spiritans’ 30-year presence in the Itsekiri Kingdom. They also gave updates on seminarians currently in formation and expressed gratitude for the monarch’s visible dedication to the cultural and humanitarian well-being of his people. Notably, the delegation praised Ogiame Atuwatse III’s advocacy for Itsekiri heritage and values both within Nigeria and internationally.

The Spiritans also presented some mission-related challenges, seeking the King’s support and wisdom. This meeting not only fostered mutual respect but also strengthened the Spiritans’ resolve to collaborate with local leaders for the spiritual and cultural flourishing of the region. The visit stands as a testament to the Spiritans’ holistic mission approach—evangelisation rooted in dialogue, presence, and shared humanity.
