Why are you afraid? The surprise of Jesus

Dear friends, there is something amazing in the readings of today. In the first reading, we see chaos, the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah who rebelled against God. In the Gospel, we see Jesus restoring order. There is something even more amazing about the gospel reading of today. The disciples are surprised Jesus is sleeping when the boat is being tossed about. Jesus is surprised that they are afraid. Hence, he asks them; why are you afraid? It is different from “do not be afraid?” Jesus is surprised that they have him in the boat yet they are afraid

Friends, our God doesn’t sleep or slumber. Though Jesus was human like us except in sin, he was not sleeping as God. Even though he may seem to sleep as a human that he was, chaotic moments are times to prove our faith in God. It is the time to prove our confidence in God.

“O man of little Faith”- there may be times in our lives that we seem to be failing in faith. But we can still ask Jesus who is the author of our life and the finisher of our faith to increase our faith, to help our unbelief.

We must learn to kill fear before it kills us. It is a killer. It is a thief. It robs us of our confidence and understanding of the might of God. Only with faith can we overcome.

The Lord be with you.
Happy new month of July.
