THE FOUR-EYED GIRL

97

EPISODE 1

By Nonye Ekwomadu.

That night wasn’t different from the others. The Peres were all fast asleep in the bedroom, some were lying supine, others, sprawled. Someone was snoring as if the nostrils were stuffed with an object. A little girl lying on the mat with two other youngsters jerked like someone convulsing and jumped to her feet, muttering aloud. The noise instantly roused their father from sleep.

“What is it now, Preye?”

He asked with bloodshot eyes.

“I want to ease myself, papa.”

Ekio got up, careful not to wake their mother. He unbolted the door and let  Preye out into the thick black open air. The loo was at the far right of the house but they hardly used it at night. Ekio retreated into the room to give Preye privacy. She bent down, staring fearfully at the darkness all around her. Suddenly, her gaze fell on a man sitting on a white horse gaping at her steadily. A ring of fire surrounded him. He could be likened to a warrior during the Roman Empire. Pere blinked incredulously at the image. It felt like a picture out of the movies. She moved her lips to scream but she couldn’t let out a word. The only thing she remembered was how she dived into the room shivering. It was strange that her father failed to notice her weird behaviour. He was probably still groggy from sleep…

The tale just began…

To be continued.
