Happiness and peace of mind: Life’s best gifts
Life itself may seem transient, with individuals striving to present their best selves while masking their challenges. Amid life’s trials, safeguarding our sense of happiness and peace of mind becomes crucial. These virtues often stem from elements like relationships and family. Yet, societal pressures sometimes tend to discredit such aspects.
There’s a prevailing tendency to glorify career success while undermining the significance of family life. Some belittle parenthood and family bonds, dismissing them as insignificant achievements. Vocal and assertive individuals tend to impose their views, belittling others who follow a different path, leading to feelings of inadequacy and stress. Their relentless derogatory remarks reframe our perspectives, imposing undue stress and corroding our mental well-being. We often let them influence us, following them on social media, despite the turmoil they cause us. Their charm clouds our judgment, letting them overshadow the joy we possess. Isn’t it clear we’re losing ourselves in this process?
What truly brings joy and peace of mind deserves utmost value. Don’t allow ‘intelligent’ or ‘overachieving’ individuals to dictate your definition of success. This reminds me of the story of a flourishing businessman who met a local fisherman on an island and chastised him for being lazy and retrogressive with his fishing business.
‘You guys seem to rest too much here when there’s so much money to make,’
he said to the fisherman. The tycoon went ahead to analyse to the fisherman how he could expand his fishing business, get trawlers, export fish, and make lots of money.
When he was done with his analysis and projections, the fisherman asked him,
‘Sir, what next are we going to be doing after we’ve made the huge money?’
‘Oh, that’s a good question,’
said the big man.
‘It’s simple. You simply retire and enjoy your money while resting.’
The fisherman laughed and said,
‘Sir, that’s exactly what we’re doing. We’re already resting, and we’re happy!’
This tale of the wealthy businessman criticised the local fisherman’s simple life. The fisherman, content with his routine, highlighted the essence of finding happiness in life’s simplicity.
Evaluate your aspirations without compromising your well-being. Embrace what brings you genuine happiness, disregarding societal pressures to conform. Your achievements need not conform to others’ standards; the key lies in finding contentment and peace of mind in whatever path you choose.
