Friends in Christ, nobody is happy finding out his or her investments of time, energy and talents do not yield. There is the feeling of disappointment. The people of Chorazin and Bethsaida were Jewish inhabitants of two towns near the Sea of Galilee who witnessed Jesus’ miracles but, according to the Gospel, did not respond with repentance. Hence, today, Jesus declares wow unto them and says that if the great works done in their midst were done in Sodom, they would have repented.
Dear friends, to whom much is given they say, much is expected. Hearing the message of Christ is a privilege. It is called the good news. Every privilege comes with responsibility. Knowledge is power they say. But we become powerless, irresponsible and less productive when we do not heed the message of Christ. It is an act of ingratitude and rebellion to reject the good news.
Christ continues to talk to us daily. He shares his love with us daily. He feels disappointed when we do not reciprocate this love with one another. At Bonaventure whom we celebrate today accepted the good news and allowed it to bear fruits in his life. He became outstanding during the era of scholasticism when he reconciled Aristotelian thoughts with that of St Augustine by helping us to understand that faith and theology have a role to play in understanding both spiritual and physical realities. Today, he is called the “Seraphic Doctor”and the “Doctor of mystical theology.” He bore fruits.
What will I be known for when I depart this life? Will I be known for a person who did not hear fruits? That would be because I did not accept the gospel message.
Friends, let us today before people of gratitude by accepting and imbibing the message of Jesus Christ in all its forms.
May the Lord bless His words in our hearts. Amen.
