There was an atmosphere of joy and thanksgiving in Motherwell Diocese today as Bishop Joseph Toal ordained Rev. Christopher Chibuike Igwe, the first African priest in the diocese’s history, on th e3rd of September 2025

Fr. Igwe, of Nigerian descent, hails from Ezza-Ezekuna in Iselu LGA, Ebonyi State. Before entering seminary, he taught in Nigeria and pursued philosophy studies in the northern part of the country. His vocational journey took a decisive turn when his cousin, Fr. Hilary, then on pastoral supply in Motherwell, encouraged him to apply to the diocese. Responding to this call meant embracing a new culture, climate, and way of life in Scotland—an adjustment he welcomed with faith and resilience.

The ordination liturgy, which commenced at 6:30pm, was both solemn and vibrant, enriched by a unique cultural blend. The Motherwell Diocesan Choir and the Nigerian Catholic Community Choir joined voices, weaving together the grandeur of Scottish liturgy with the joyful rhythms of African-Igbo hymns. This harmony of traditions added beauty and depth to the celebration. Even the vestments reflected this cultural union: both Bishop Toal’s and Fr. Igwe’s chasubles were tailored with touches of the traditional Igbo fabric, Isi Agu.

The presence of Fr. Igwe’s parents, who travelled from Nigeria to witness the ceremony, brought special joy. They beamed with pride as they saw their son ordained in such a radiant celebration of faith, surrounded by fellow African priests and lay faithful, the Scottish faithful, and a wide circle of friends.

Motherwell Diocese, though facing the same vocational challenges seen across the Church in Europe, has remained a fertile ground for priestly vocations. In recent years, Bishop Toal has encouraged new expressions of faith within the local Church, including the inauguration of the African Catholic Community in the diocese. Fr Christopher’s ordination marks a new chapter in that journey.

Fr Chris welcomed by brother priests

Having joined the diocese, he began his seminary formation at St. Mary’s College, Oscott, in 2021, and was ordained a Deacon on 14 December 2024. His priestly ordination today stands as both a personal milestone and a communal sign of hope for the universal Church.
