An Eco-Spiritual Response Rooted in Creation Care
St. Aidan’s High School recently launched an innovative beekeeping project, inspired by Pope Francis’s encyclical “Laudato Si’.” This project, spearheaded by Mr. Kenny O’Donnell, aims to connect students with nature and promote environmental stewardship, echoing the Pope’s call for care of our common home.

Mr. O’Donnell began this initiative with three enthusiastic students: Emmy, Eva, and Nihim. Together, they established a small apiary on the school grounds, where they tend to the bees and learn about their vital role in ecosystems. This hands-on project not only educates students about beekeeping but also emphasises the importance of biodiversity and sustainable practices.

“Laudato Si'” encourages us to develop a profound respect for nature and to take concrete steps towards preserving it. The beekeeping project embodies this message by fostering a sense of responsibility and stewardship in the students. They are learning first-hand about the delicate balance of our environment and the impact of human actions on all living creatures.

A visit to the beehives with Kenny was a bit intimidating. With an enthusiastic student, Liam M’Intyre, we were properly suited up, well protected from any potential bee attacks.
Approaching a beehive requires calmness and caution. One needs to move slowly and avoid sudden gestures or loud noises. Protective clothing, including a veil, gloves, and a bee suit are essential. It is safer to approach from the side or rear and avoid blocking the hive entrance. More so, one must avoid strong scents like perfumes or soaps. While Kenny was observing and inspecting the hive, Liam gently held a smoker to gently calm the bees. I realised that it is necessary to remain composed, because panic can provoke stings. This entails respecting their space, especially during warm seasons when bees are most active and defensive.

Through this project, St. Aidan’s High School is not only contributing to local biodiversity but also nurturing a new generation of environmentally conscious individuals. The beekeeping initiative is a practical and educational response to Pope Francis’s call to protect and cherish our planet.
I’m highly delighted to be associated with this beautiful initiative.
