A MUSIC STAR RISING FROM MADAGASCAR, Gianna

VALIBMBAVAKA FANANTENANA GIANNA, Republic of Madagascar, Southeastern coast of Africa

Gianna’s Melodic Journey

Valibmbavaka Fanantenana Gianna, a 14-year-old talented singer in her second year of high school, faces challenging circumstances at home. Both her parents grapple with mental health issues, exposing her to various dangers until a dedicated female catechist, now a relative, intervened.

It was this compassionate catechist who discovered Gianna’s singing talent. She has gained recognition in the local church for her renditions of prayers in the native language during the faithful gatherings. Despite lacking formal training due to her challenging background, her passion for singing remains resolute. Her name, Valibmbavaka, a Malagasy name signifying “prayer answered,” echoes the hope her parents entrusted in God amid their mental health struggles.

Gianna’s inspiration for singing often stems from her daily experiences, especially moments of hardship that fuel her performances of prayers. While she dreams of having her songs recorded and participating in talent shows, these aspirations remain unfulfilled. Although a priest suggested sending her to a music school for refinement, the rural environment lacks such educational opportunities.

Her challenges in nurturing her talent include the absence of music mentors or institutions in her rural setting. Gianna resides with her guardian, the catechist, and attends a boarding school managed by Reverend Sisters in a nearby developing town, roughly 20 kilometers from her home. Furthermore, her progress hinges on the limited resources of the catechist, who earns meager income.
