A New Chapter in Faith at St. Aidan’s

Discover how faith and education intertwine at St. Aidan’s. As chaplain, I’m exploring the powerful role of faith in shaping our students' futures.

If we fail to share our experiences and reflections about our surroundings, it suggests we are not contributing our faith to the community’s narrative. Active engagement involves sharing our stories and our faith. We either influence our environment with our beliefs or it influences us. True harmony arises when this influence, rooted in faith, is mutual.

When I arrived at St Aidan’s in Wishaw, Scotland in August 2023, I initially wondered, “Why am I here?” This question evolved into “What am I doing here?” as I adjusted to my new role, which is still ongoing. The warm welcome I received reflects the hospitable nature of Scottish culture, which contrasts comfortingly with the chilly weather.

As the new school chaplain, succeeding Rev. Fr. Bonaventure Peter CSSp, my role includes conducting the Holy Mass and fulfilling various pastoral needs. We hold Masses every Wednesday at 8:30 am, as well as on holy days of obligation and special occasions within the school community.

I work closely with Martin Mann, the Religious Education principal teacher, who joined shortly after I did. Martin took over from Elizabeth Hynes, a devoted Catholic who balanced her school responsibilities with a nurturing, motherly role. Our simultaneous arrivals brought both a new chaplain and a new Religious Education teacher to the school.

Martin, a committed Catholic and disciplinarian, embodies the church’s social teachings and is actively involved with Missio Scotland. He encourages students to participate in charitable initiatives, including the Scottish Catholic International Aid Fund (SCIAF).

The Staff

At St Aidan’s, our staff members are more than colleagues—they are a supportive family creating a warm and welcoming environment. Their dedication is especially evident in their support for students needing extra attention.

Special recognition goes to Claire Connelly, our school head, whose compassionate leadership inspires the entire community. Despite her high position, Claire’s gentle and nurturing approach earns her admiration and respect from both staff and students.

My Concern

St Aidan’s is home to vibrant students who thrive in a positive, expressive environment. Many are interested in church activities and faith matters, yet their participation in religious worship is limited by a lack of exposure, influenced by popular culture trends that diminish religious traditions.

While some students of St Aidan sometimes present challenges, these are reflective of broader societal trends and dynamics within their homes. It is a fact that a strong partnership between parents and teachers is crucial for shaping students into responsible citizens. Protecting children legally is important, but discipline is also essential for their proper upbringing. Neglecting discipline risks spoiling the child.

What Am I Doing Here?

However, as a priest, I’m here to guide students on their spiritual journey towards God and to keep the church’s presence active in the school environment. My role also includes expanding my knowledge and engaging in meaningful interactions.

My experiences in various classes have provided valuable insights and sparked reflections. I’m impressed by how well-equipped the school departments are and the teachers’ deep knowledge and effective teaching methods.

Teachers are invaluable partners in evangelization, as they spend significant time with students, often more than parents do. Before I got my driving license, the head teacher and both former and current Religious Education teachers, Elizabeth and Martin, and other members of staff took turns driving me to and from school. Their commitment highlights the importance they place on having a chaplain in the school.

Above all, I urge parents to prioritize their children’s religious education, as it is crucial for upholding moral values and guiding them through life’s challenges. A generation that neglects spiritual growth may struggle in an ever-changing world.

Understanding my role, I am optimistic about making a positive impact during my time at St. Aidan’s.
