Dear friends, today we are presented with the Gospel text that teaches us about God’s ways which is totally different from our own way as human beings. Jesus chose the members of his community, the community of the apostles and he sent them forth.

My concern with this community is that Jesus did not choose those of high standards. One of the criteria for choosing these men were their availability. Once Jesus calls them, they made themselves available, left whatever they were doing and followed Jesus. Jesus makes it known to us that it is not about our capabilities but our availability.

If we make ourselves available instruments to Jesus he will definitely use us. Before he sent them forth, he gave them authority. When we make ourselves available Jesus qualifies us. When we make ourselves available, Jesus gives us the authority and the power to overcome obstacles.

Dear friends, it is not by strength or power, that we are called, it is by a humble heart screaming availability. Let us then be humble and make ourselves available for God. Let us make him know that we are not qualified so he can qualify us. May God help us to be humble and available for his service. Amen.

Peace be with you.
